Meet “Will”:
1. Name: Will Zolna
2. Zodiac sign: Gemini
3. Hometown: Chicago
4. Your favorite stroke: Butterfly
5. Lane you swim in and why your lane is better than the other lanes on
the team:
I swim in Lane 6. Lane 6 is the best because WonKee is there and he's often Angry. Which works well because I'm often Outraged. And Fred's comments keep me distracted.
6. Tell us a little bit about your aquatics/sports background?
I started swimming competitively when I was 11, mostly because I have no other athletic ability whatsoever and swimming was the only thing I didn't suck at. I swam all through college (NIU - go Huskies!) and afterward decided to join Masters Swimming, even though at the time I believed it was something that only old people did. But it was a great decision and I've had a lot of fun and made great friends through swimming.
7. When and why did you join DCAC (any interesting stories associated)?
I joined DCAC the same way a lot of folks did - Jack Markey! For years before I moved here, I would travel to DC for work and connected with Jack when I was looking for a team to swim with. Of course, Jack not only introduced me to the team but also acted as my own personal social coordinator, which made for some interesting adventures. (True story: after a night out with Jack I ended up in the back of a DC Police car. But that's one for another time...) So when I moved here, it was a no-brainer.
8. What is your favorite kind of swim set/workout and why?
My all-time favorite is a set that I made up, consisting of three broken 500s. First set is: 200 free, 150 IM (minus free), 100 fly, 50 free. The second set is: 200 IM, 150 fly, 100 free, 50 fly. Third set is: 200 fly, 150 free, 100 IM, 50 free. I like this set because if you can do it, you can pretty much do anything. My other favorite set is: hot tub and donuts.
9. Do you have any swimming/sports goals for the coming year? If so,
what are they?
I'm finishing up school this year and it keeps me pretty busy. And stressed. So I'm swimming for the stress release and that's about it. I probably won't compete. But look out in 2011 - that'll be the year I get back into competition and try to reclaim the national title in the 200 fly for my age group!
10. What do you love most about swimming?
I feel better in the water than I do anywhere else. That, and the people on this team keep me laughing. I've swum for a number of Masters teams over the years and DCAC is the best.
11. What do you dislike most about swimming?
Cold water. And the people who take this all too seriously.
12. What is one of your favorite things to do out of the pool?
You know, the usual: macrame, cross stitching. I also love to Bedazzle.
13. What is something that most other people on the team don't know
about you?
I like to roll around in the sand like a horse.
14. What’s the weirdest/funniest thing you’ve experience so far in nursing
school?
I have a few good hospital stories already, but to mention them would be a HIPAA violation. But I will say that people will tell you pretty much anything when they know you're a nurse.
15. Ok, a couple silly questions. Didn’t you used to be “Bill”?
Yeah, I was Bill. But I got tired of the "I'm just a Bill sitting here on Capitol Hill" jokes.
16. Tim Geithner, Peter Orszag, or Rahm Emanuel and why?
OK, this question is just slightly better than the "Pattinson, Lautner or Radcliffe" one. I'm going with Emanuel because he's a Chicago boy like me.
17. Have you ever peed in the pool?
Is the Pope a Nazi?
18. If you could choose one person on the team to be MetroWeekly Cover
Boy of the Year, who would it be and why?
Nice try, I'm not stepping in this one.
Oh wait - I'd choose Andrew Bellows because he's been having quite a year -- he's our DCAC President, so it's only natural that he should be the next MetroWeekly Cover Boy!
19. Please describe DCAC in three words or less:
Trashy. But sweet.
20. Can you check my pulse?
Gladly. But I'd much rather test your capillary refill - that's more fun.
